#9 Pittsburg (7-3) at #8 Monte Vista (6-4) – Friday, 7

Pittsburg

  • Second in the BVAL (4-1)
  • Have posted 10 winning seasons in the last 11 years
  • Have lost just once first round game in last five years
  • Averaging 34.2 points, allowing 25.6 points
  • Harris Ross didn’t play versus Antioch (577 rushing yards in previous three games)
  • Craijon Menefee – five straight games with a touchdown
  • Jamal Lockett came on in the playoffs last season for Pittsburg and has two kickoff returns for touchdowns this season.
  • Pittsburg is –3 in turnovers this season, including just 11 takeaways, and allowing 346.9 yards per game. Allowed 505 to Deer Valley and 476 to Freedom
  • Lorenzo Renteria was just 3-of-14 for 34 yards and an interception against Monte Vista  16-of-25, 248 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT in last three games

Monte Vista

  • Tied-fourth in the EBAL (3-3)
  • 12 straight years in the playoffs
  • Haven’t lost a first round game since 2006 (4A East Bay Quarterfinals) and have a streak of winning seven or more games in 11 straight years on the line.
  • Two months ago, Monte Vista hammered the Pirates, 44-14, in a game they led 31-0 at halftime. Pittsburg was outgained, 376-172, including just 37 yards in the first half, Jamal Lockett was held to 54 yards (second lowest total of the season), Zack Chang ran for three touchdowns, and Nikita Zamora threw two touchdown passes to Jalen Avery.
  • Mustangs assistant head coach Chris Babcock is a good follow on Twitter for info such as this: In the last three games, Monte Vista has rushed for just 202 yards on 88 carries (2.3 average). Babcock also tweeted:

#13 Antioch (6-4) at #4 San Ramon Valley (5-5) – Friday, 7

Antioch

  • Fifth in the BVAL (1-4)
  • Averaging 32.2 points; Allowing 24.9 points
  • Had just one winning season over seven years before this stretch of two consecutive winning campaigns
  • Quarterback Hunter Karnthong didn’t play in season finale versus Pittsburg
  • Went 5-0 in a weak non-league schedule, although the Panthers do own a 25-22 win over the 3rd seed in Division II, Northgate.
  • The defense has been a killer in their league slate, allowing 37.4 points.
  • Running game totaled just 72 and 90 in losses to Freedom and Pittsburg. Elbert Hamilton, Jr., and Hunter Karnthong have ran for over 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns this season.
  • Antioch had missed the playoffs eight consecutive years, but have now made it two straight. Last year, they played Pitt tough in a 19-13 loss.
  • Karnthong – 90/158, 1203 yards, 10 TD, 5 INT, 134 car, 855 yards, 13 TD, PR TD; Did not throw a touchdown pass in last two games he played; four 100+ rushing games
