Baseball: CCS Division I Quarterfinal Previews (AUDIO)

#6 Mitty (17-12) vs. #3 San Benito (22-6) at Hartnell College – Saturday, 2pm

These baseball powers met at the Crown Classic last month, and Mitty pulled out a 2-1, 11-inning win. David Messer allowed just three hits over seven innings, while Neil Vranicar got the win with four shutout innings, and allowing only two baserunners. Presdon Caldera drove in both Monarch runs. For San Benito, Tyler Pina, Conner Menez, and Skylar Fuss combined to allow just three Mitty base hits.

In round one, Mitty was a 7-1 winner against Menlo-Atherton. Luke Rasmussen and Doug Gimenez each had two hits and an RBI, while Sean Downey allowed just one run in five innings. The Monarchs are averaging 5.7 runs per game, and can pitch either Messer or freshman Brett Foley (6-1, 2.47 ERA).

#6 Saratoga (18-12) vs. #3 Mt. Pleasant (24-2) at St. Francis – Saturday, 7pm

Tyler Plesse delivered the winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Saratoga to a 4-3 victory over Burlingame on Thursday. Will Dennis was the winning pitcher for the Falcons, which means another lefty, junior Kyle Dozier gets the nod against Mt. Pleasant.

Baseball: SI, Los Altos, Saratoga, and Gunn all advance to CCS Quarters, DLS wins EBAL… and Thursday’s Roundup

In the CCS Division II quarterfinals, #5 St. Ignatius (20-8-1) raced out to a 8-0 lead, and held on for a 8-6 win against #12 Westmont (15-13), as Jeremy Balan writes. Matt DeBenedetti and Dylan Foster combined for four hits, four runs and two RBIs.

SI coach Matt Stecher: “We left seven in scoring position, but the guys toward the bottom of the order came up big and got hits when we needed them – hits that made a difference, for sure.”

  • In the quarterfinals, the Wildcats will play #4 Los Altos (22-8), who beat #13 Leigh (11-17), 8-5. The Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie. Conrad Rogers came through with two hits and two RBI, while Nolan O’Such was the winning pitcher.

Baseball: First Round of CCS playoffs, another tie for first in EBAL… and Wednesday’s Roundup

In the CCS Division I First Round, WCAL teams went 5-0, which set up one good all-WCAL matchup as #2 St. Francis will host #10 Serra on Saturday.

Thomas Cox pitched a two-hit gem and struck out eight, and five different players drove in runs for the Padres (19-12) in their 5-0 win at #7 Wilcox (21-12), as Glenn Reeves writes.

#11 Burlingame (20-6) at #6 Saratoga (17-12) – Thursday, 4pm

Saratoga ended the season with four straight losses, and only scored seven runs in those games, but it was against SCVAL De Anza powers Los Altos and Wilcox. The Falcons finished in a tie for third during the regular season, and are turning to left-handed ace Will Dennis in this opening round game. Kyle Dozier and Stevie Berman are also integral players for Saratoga, who is enjoying their first winning season and playoff season in three years.

Baseball: College Park wins first league title since 1994… and Tuesday’s Roundup

Freshman Joe DeMers attacked the strike zone and threw only 75 pitches in his one-hit shutout of Northgate, 2-0, as College Park won the DVAL title, their first league championship since 1994.

The Falcons scored their two runs in the third inning against Broncos (20-3, 9-2) starter Ben Krauth. The Falcons’ Athan Koutsoubinas drove in a run with a base hit, and Dominic Bilotti walked and scored on an errant throw, as Stephanie Hammon writes.

This was the 15th time the Falcons (19-5, 12-0) held an opponent to one run or less, and they also have a team ERA of just 0.83, which ranks second in the country.

#11 Menlo-Atherton (19-8) at #6 Archbishop Mitty (16-12)

Mitty, a semifinalist last season, lost four of their last six against WCAL competition. The Monarchs averaged 5.7 runs per game this year, but did not hit for much power (.311 slugging). They did draw walks (128) and Nick Jackson had a team-high 23 for a .545 on-base percentage. Doug Gimenez paced the team with a .349 average. As for the Mitty pitching, the team did allow 5.1 runs per game, and have two starters to choose from: senior Sean Downey (3-4, 3.37 ERA) or freshman Brett Foley (6-1, 2.47 ERA).

Baseball: Northgate at College Park Preview… and Tuesday’s Schedule (AUDIO)

College Park (17-5, 10-0) can win their first conference title in 18 years with a win, while Northgate (20-2, 9-1) has an opportunity to pull into a tie for first place in the Diablo Valley.

On April 19, the Falcons defeated the Broncos, 5-2, as freshman Joe DeMers allowed just six hits, no walks, and struck out six. Those two Northgate runs are half the total that College Park has allowed this season in DVAL play. The Falcons have allowed one run or less in 14 of their 22 games, and are 14-0 when they score four or more runs.
