Men’s Tennis: CCS Singles, Doubles Championships
May 17, 2012

Yesterday’s results of the CCS individual doubles and singles tournament provided an exciting finish to the season. The singles championship pit identical twin brothers against each other. And the top two doubles seeds were eliminated in the semifinals.

Mason and Ben Vierra, the nationally ranked identical twin brothers from Stevenson, have had more highs and lows in their careers than most 17-year-olds. Since they were boys they’ve played in the most competitive tournaments and both drew the attention of college scouts as freshman.

Men’s Tennis: The League Tournaments
April 26, 2012

EBAL

The NCS Playoffs for individuals are scheduled for Friday, May 4 and the NCS Team Tournament starts May 8. But today is the EBAL Tournament. Monte Vista was much the best this season maintaining a perfect league record. California and San Ramon Valley were close behind the Mustangs.

Every EBAL team had major talent at #1 singles this year but Foothill’s Chris Wen stands out. Wen faced talented challengers all season—Brody Lee of SRV, Aditya Mohan of Cal, Alec Bakos of De La Salle, Jaimeson Coretez of Granada. He only lost once to Michael Feldman of Monte Vista. Wen and Feldman are favorites for the EBAL singles finals but the field is deep with upset potential.

WCAL

Today marks the WCAL Tournament and some of the best of the Bay will compete for league honors. At singles, Archbishop Mitty’s Ivan Kravtchenko, Junipero Serra’s Sean Talmadge, St. Ignatius’ Anthony Tsodikov, and Sacred Heart Cathedral’s Clark Winninger have been superb all season. But as a team no one has bested Bellarmine who remains undefeated.

On Tuesday, Archbishop Mitty beat Valley Christian 7-0. Mitty sits in second place of the WCAL behind undefeated Bellarmine with a league record of 4-1.

Men’s Tennis: Weekly Roundup
March 11, 2012

A look at what happened this past week, and a look ahead at the upcoming week in men’s tennis.

BSAL

Piedmont won their first BSAL match of the season against St. Joseph Notre Dame this week on Tuesday, March 6. The victory over the Pilots along with a win over College Prep on Thursday and a win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Friday has helped the Highlanders to an impressive 9-1 record on the season.

Last weekend, Piedmont traveled to Clovis, CA for the California High School Tennis Classic and placed third in the Division II. They beat Modesto, Bullard, Oak Ridge, Menlo Atherton and lost to Palo Alto.

The Highlanders success is inspiring since they are without junior phenom Mackie McDonald. McDonald left school and competed in the Australian Open Juniors this past January. Head coach Neil Rothenberg manages without him thanks in large part to his decorated senior co-captains Matt Wang and Daniel Cooper.
