Track and Field: Auzenne’s Efforts spark St. Francis Women, Bellarmine Men romp, plus DFAL and MVAL results

Micha Auzenne ran 100 meters three different ways Friday evening, and each time she was a winner, leading host St. Francis to the women’s team title at the West Coast Athletic League championships in Mountain View.

Auzenne had a running start and carried a baton in her first jaunt, anchoring the Lancers’ 400 relay team to a season best time 48.46, the second fastest time in the Central Coast Section this spring. Senior Kathleen Garrity, and juniors Marisa Padilla and Jessica Roey preceded Auzenne in the relay.

Track and Field: What to watch for at the League Championships

League championship competitions are happening all around the Bay this weekend, with athletes striving to stretch their seasons another week.

The best of the bunch at this week’s North Coast Section league contests will advance a regional meet on May 19, either the Bay Shore Area at James Logan in Union City, or the Tri Valley Area at Granada in Livermore. The top finishers in Central Coast Section league finals will qualify for the CCS semifinals at Gilroy High, also on May 19.

Track and Field: Floreal leads Palo Alto to De Anza title; Sturges paces Mountain View girls; plus EBAL, WCAL results

Junior sprinter E.J. Floreal dashed into the Palo Alto High record book for the second straight meet, winning the 200 meters in 21.16 seconds and helping the Vikings claim the boys’ championship at the SCVAL-De Anza Division finals Thursday.

Floreal’s effort, which ranks second in the state, shattered Ken Smith’s 31-year-old school record (21.61) and sent the son of Stanford track and field head coach Edrick Floreal to the victory stand for the third time.

Track and Field: Wilcox boys, Los Gatos girls seize El Camino titles

Punctuating undefeated dual meet seasons, the Wilcox boys and Los Gatos girls claimed SCVAL-El Camino team championships Wednesday at Fremont High in Sunnyvale.

Wilcox senior Ricky Strehlow earned three gold medals, going a PR 15.33 to beat Santa Clara’s Kingsley Okakpu (15.41) in the 110-meter hurdles and taking the horizontal jumps with a 20-10 long and 45-10 triple. Christopher Nguyen led a Wilcox sweep of the top four places in the 100 dash with 11.17 and placed second in the 200 behind Los Gatos’ Robbie McQuillin (23.03). Sophomore Delshawn Mitchell (50.49) nipped Homestead’s Mirko Gataric by .02 to win the 400, and scored points for the Chargers in the horizontals with second in the triple jump and third in the long. Wilcox also won both relays.

Meet of Champions

As anticipated, Sacramento’s Meet of Champions Saturday at American River College was full of outstanding performances

Kennedy-Richmond senior Kenneth Walker III was named Boys Track Athlete of the Meet, after blazing a wind-aided 13.75 in the 110-meter hurdles, winning the 300 in 38.14 in his first race at that distance in about two years and anchoring the Eagles’ victorious 400 relay team (42.27).

What a way to launch the last month of the track and field season?

With just five weeks until the California state meet in Clovis, Sacramento’s 32nd annual Meet of Champions Saturday at American River College could turn out to be the best late-season invitational Northern California has seen in many years.

A star-studded entry list, representing 145 schools, features more than 30 athletes ranked among the top 10 in the state, according to DyeStat. Many of those top-flight performers are from the Bay Area, including national girls’ triple jump leader Sasha Wallace of Holy Names, Kennedy-Richmond’s Kenneth Walker, CA’s fastest 110-meter hurdler and California High senior Noel Frazier, the second-rated high jumper in the state.

Warm weather, elite competition and a fast track added up to excellent performances for Bay Area athletes Friday in the Woody Wilson Relays at UC Davis, the CCS Top 8 Classic at San Jose City College, and the Mt. SAC Relays.

Senior Nick Ratto of St. Joseph Notre Dame had a good night on the track he will call home starting next season, lowering his PR (personal record) in the 800 meters by more than two seconds. The UC-Davis-bound Ratto finished the two-lapper in 1:53.87, the best time by a North Coast Section athlete this season and fifth fastest in the state.

Track and Field: A couple of big events this weekend

CCS Top 8 Classic

Many of the Central Coast Section’s best runners, throwers and jumpers will compete in the 33rd CCS Top 8 Classic Friday at San Jose City College.

The meet, which serves as a preview for the top CCS boys and girls prior to league finals, will begin at 3 p.m. with the varsity discus and the frosh-soph pole vault. The first running event, the girls’ 400 relay, is scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.
